Communications and Questions

This competition brief provides the information required to submit an entry. Teams participating in the design competition may seek clarification or submit questions to the competition advisor via email at: questions@joneskroloff.com.

The competition advisor must receive all questions by no later than midnight February 1, 2008. Any changes to this document resulting from answers to the questions will become part of the competition instructions. The Competition Advisor will work with the competition's sponsors to provide timely answers to any questions submitted. All questions, answers, and resulting program clarifications will be posted on the competition's webpage: www.artsonearth.org/workplay. Authorship of the questions submitted will not be cited.

A copy of the questions and responses will be provided to the Jury prior to their deliberations.

Teams participating in this competition may not communicate with any member of the Jury regarding their entry for the duration of the competition. Once the brief has been distributed, the Competition Advisor is the only person authorized to answer questions regarding the competition and its directives.

Teams are also not to contact the University's Architecture and Engineering Services Office or any similar University office for supplemental materials.

Submission Requirements

All submission materials should be easy to understand by a broad audience. Clarity is essential. Each submission must include the following three items:

  1. Presentation Boards

    The principal component of each team's submission shall be one 30" x 40" presentation board (horizontal orientation, 30" high x 40" wide). Presentation boards should be at least 1/8" thick and rigid enough to be self supporting when propped against a wall or chair. The board must be free of any marks, logos, insignias, or writing that might identify its authorship. The board should fully document the team's proposed concept. Visual material on the board should be presented in as clear a manner as possible. Drawing requirements are intentionally loose to allow competitors with the broadest possible backgrounds to enter. That said, at a minimum the board must comprise:

    • an aerial view locating your proposal on the site, or a site plan with the adjoining context indicated. This aerial view should be oriented so that north is toward the top of the board;
    • diagrams documenting your team's concept;
    • plans, sections, perspectives, model photos, sketches or other drawings conveying the organization, height, material quality, and overall effect of your proposal in its context;
    • a narrative explanation of your proposal including a brief discussion (150-250 words) of the concept and the ideas behind it.

  2. Digital Media

    In addition to your Presentation Board, each team must submit a CD with the following material:

    • Graphic File: PDF or JPG file of your Competition Board at 300dpi
    • Written Statement: maximum 500 words describing your submission and the ideas behind it. The narrative must include the project name, the premise and concept of your proposed design, a description of the element or elements of your scheme that you consider the most important and essential, and how you envision the project being realized. This may be the same text that appears on your competition board, or a more extensive one.
    • Slide Presentation (optional): Teams also may elect to prepare a brief, PowerPoint or Keynote, or QuickTime file of up to 10 images, documenting their submission.
    • Audio presentation (optional): Teams also may elect to prepare a DVD that includes a sound track.

  3. Registration Form

    A completed and signed registration form listing all of the team members and their University affiliation. View/download the registration form (PDF).

The Digital Materials and Registration Form should be placed in a 9" x 12" envelope and securely taped to the back of the competition board.

Only one submission will be accepted per team.
